Appliance Removal
Old appliance? Yes, we take it.
Refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, ranges, dishwashers and water heaters — out of the kitchen, laundry room or garage and onto the trailer. Common appliances have a set price, so you know the cost before we come.
Quick list: refrigerators · chest & upright freezers · washers · dryers · electric ranges · dishwashers · microwaves · water heaters
Before we get there
Each appliance needs a little prep. Doing it ahead of time keeps the pickup quick and keeps water off your floors.
| Appliance | What to do first |
|---|---|
| Refrigerator / freezer | Empty it, unplug it and let it defrost for a day with a towel underneath. If it has an ice maker, shut off the water line valve behind it. |
| Washer | Turn off both water valves. Run a short drain cycle or bail out standing water so the drum is empty. |
| Dryer | Unplug it. Electric dryers are easy; gas dryers need the gas line shut off and capped first (see below). |
| Range / stove | Electric: unplug it. Gas: the line must be disconnected and capped by a qualified person before pickup. |
| Dishwasher | [FILL: does David disconnect built-in dishwashers, or should they be pulled out first?] |
| Water heater | Turn off power or gas and the cold-water supply, then drain the tank. A full 50-gallon tank holds over 400 pounds of water. |
About gas appliances
Gas ranges, dryers and water heaters can't be pulled away from the wall while the line is still connected. Have a plumber or your gas company shut off and cap the line before pickup day. If you're replacing the appliance, the installer of the new one can usually do this at the same visit — ask them to leave the old unit disconnected.
[FILL: if David is qualified to disconnect gas appliances, rewrite this section to say so.]
Where old appliances end up
Refrigerators, freezers and window AC units contain refrigerant that has to be recovered by certified technicians before the metal can be scrapped — it isn't allowed to be vented into the air. Appliances are mostly steel, so most of what we pick up goes to metal recycling instead of the landfill.
New one already delivered?
Stores don't always haul the old one away, or they charge extra and need it disconnected and waiting at the door. We'll take it from wherever it ended up — the garage, the carport, the back porch.
Rental property turnover
Replacing appliances across a unit or several units? We can take all of them in one trip. See rental cleanouts if the tenant left more behind.
